It is commonly accepted that the educational environment has been undergoing considerable change due to the use of the Information and Communication tools. But learning depends upon actions such as experimenting, visualizing and demonstrating through which the learner succeeds in constructing his own knowledge. Although it is not easy to achieve these actions through current ICT supported learning approaches, Role Playing Games (RPG) may well develop such capacities. The creation of an interactive computer game with RPG characteristics, about the 500th anniversary of the city of Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island, is invested with compelling educational/pedagogical implications, aiming clearly at teaching history and social relations through playing. Players interpret different characters in different settings/scenarios, experiencing adventures, meeting challenges and trying to reach multiple and simultaneous goals in the areas of education, entertainment and social integration along the first 150 years of the history of Funchal. Through this process they will live and understand all the social and historical factors of that epoch.

This study is based on a previous experimental work in which embedded cylindrical heaters were applied to a pultrusion machine die, and resultant energetic performance compared with that achieved with the former heating system based on planar resistances. The previous work allowed to conclude that the use of embedded resistances enhances significantly the energetic performance of pultrusion process, leading to 57% decrease of energy consumption. However, the aforementioned study was developed with basis on an existing pultrusion die, which only allowed a single relative position for the heaters. In the present work, new relative positions for the heaters were investigated in order to optimize heat distribution process and energy consumption. Finite Elements Analysis was applied as an efficient tool to identify the best relative position of the heaters into the die, taking into account the usual parameters involved in the process and the control system already tested in the previous study. The analysis was firstly developed with basis on eight cylindrical heaters located in four different location plans. In a second phase, in order to refine the results, a new approach was adopted using sixteen heaters with the same total power. Final results allow to conclude that the correct positioning of the heaters can contribute to about 10% of energy consumption reduction, decreasing the production costs and leading to a better eco-efficiency of pultrusion process.

Group decision making plays an important role in organizations, especially in the present-day economy that demands high-quality, yet quick decisions. Group decision-support systems (GDSSs) are interactive computer-based environments that support concerted, coordinated team efforts toward the completion of joint tasks. The need for collaborative work in organizations has led to the development of a set of general collaborative computer-supported technologies and specific GDSSs that support distributed groups (in time and space) in various domains. However, each person is unique and has different reactions to various arguments. Many times a disagreement arises because of the way we began arguing, not because of the content itself. Nevertheless, emotion, mood, and personality factors have not yet been addressed in GDSSs, despite how strongly they influence results. Our group’s previous work considered the roles that emotion and mood play in decision making. In this article, we reformulate these factors and include personality as well. Thus, this work incorporates personality, emotion, and mood in the negotiation process of an argumentbased group decision-making process. Our main goal in this work is to improve the negotiation process through argumentation using the affective characteristics of the involved participants. Each participant agent represents a group decision member. This representation lets us simulate people with different personalities. The discussion process between group members (agents) is made through the exchange of persuasive arguments. Although our multiagent architecture model4 includes two types of agents—the facilitator and the participant— this article focuses on the emotional, personality, and argumentation components of the participant agent.

Neste relatório apresenta-se o projeto de Educação e Intervenção Social intitulado “Máscaras da (In)Capacidade”, que assentou na metodologia de Investigação-Ação Participativa. Caracterizando-se pela análise dos contextos, pela ação, pela reflexão profunda e contínua, e pela avaliação, sempre numa perspetiva de participação, esta metodologia possibilita ao investigador social conhecer e envolver-se na realidade de uma maneira muito mais efetiva. O presente trabalho constitui, assim, um olhar retrospetivo sobre o trabalho desenvolvido num contexto institucional de acolhimento de pessoas com deficiência intelectual. O projeto desenvolvido teve como principal finalidade: “Melhorar as dinâmicas relacionais e de funcionamento existentes na instituição, de forma a proporcionar um maior bem-estar físico e psicológico das pessoas que trabalham, vivem e/ou frequentam a instituição”. Neste sentido, promovendo sempre a participação efetiva de pessoas com incapacidade e seus cuidadores, procedeu-se à utilização de técnicas que permitiram conhecer, analisar e trabalhar no contexto, tendo em vista a concretização dos objetivos gerais do projeto. Esses objetivos, de uma forma sinóptica, tinham como intenção promover uma melhor interação entre todas as pessoas do CAO, e melhorar o funcionamento do Centro de Atividades Ocupacionais (CAO) da Instituição. Assim, procurando sempre uma mudança construída e refletida por todos, num processo de avaliação contínua, é possível afirmar que existiu uma melhoria tanto a nível das dinâmicas relacionais, como ao nível de alguns aspetos relacionados com o funcionamento da valência
